Problem

The two stereographic charts of the chapter are related on their overlap by RS=a2/RNR_S=a^2/R_N, with the same ϕ\phi in both. Consider the point where RN=2aR_N=2a (so RS=a/2R_S=a/2), and at that point the tangent vector V=∂RN\mathbf V=\partial_{R_N} and the covector ω=dRN\boldsymbol\omega=dR_N (the gradient of the coordinate function RNR_N itself). ((a)) Starting from the basis chain rules ∂μ′=(∂xμ/∂xμ′)∂μ\partial_{\mu'}=(\partial x^\mu/\partial x^{\mu'})\partial_\mu and dxμ′=(∂xμ′/∂xμ)dxμdx^{\mu'}=(\partial x^{\mu'}/\partial x^\mu)dx^\mu, derive general formulas for VRSV^{R_S} in terms of VRNV^{R_N} and for ωRS\omega_{R_S} in terms of ωRN\omega_{R_N}, for a vector or covector with no ϕ\phi component. ((b)) Evaluate the Jacobian ∂RS/∂RN\partial R_S/\partial R_N and the reciprocal Jacobian ∂RN/∂RS\partial R_N/\partial R_S at RN=2aR_N=2a, and use them to find VRSV^{R_S} and ωRS\omega_{R_S} there. ((c)) Compute ω(V)\boldsymbol\omega(\mathbf V) directly in the (RN,ϕ)(R_N,\phi) chart, and again from the components found in part (b) in the (RS,ϕ)(R_S,\phi) chart. Explain why the two must agree, whatever the two charts are.
