Problem
The Christoffel formula was derived from metric compatibility and zero torsion. Prove independently that these two conditions allow no other connection. Suppose Γλμν and Γ~λμν are two connections, both metric compatible for the same metric (∇αgμν=0 and ∇~αgμν=0) and both torsion-free, and set Cλμν≡Γ~λμν−Γλμν. (a) Explain briefly why Cλμν is a tensor, and why Cλμν=Cλνμ. (b) Using metric compatibility of both connections, and writing Cναμ≡gνλCλαμ, show that Cναμ+Cμαν=0 for every choice of α,μ,ν. (c) Write this relation for the three cyclic permutations of (α,μ,ν), combine them by the same add-two-subtract-one trick used to isolate the Christoffel formula itself, and show that every Cναμ, and hence every Cλμν, vanishes. Conclude that Γ~=Γ.
