Problem
A cloud of non-interacting dust particles (pressureless fluid, p=0) has stress-energy tensor Tμν=ρuμuν, with ρ the rest-frame energy density and uμ the four-velocity of a fluid element, normalised by uμuμ=−1.
((a)) Starting from ∇μTμν=0, contract with uν and use uμuμ=−1 to obtain the continuity equation ∇μ(ρuμ)=0. Substitute this back into ∇μTμν=0 to show that each dust element satisfies uμ∇μuν=0, the geodesic equation.
((b)) A weak, static, spherically symmetric gravitational field has the metric ds2=−(1+c22Φ)c2dt2+dx2+dy2+dz2, with ∣Φ/c2∣≪1 and Φ=Φ(x,y,z) time-independent (the Newtonian-limit metric). Using the definition of the Christoffel symbols, show that to leading order in Φ/c2, Γ00i=∂iΦ.
((c)) A dust particle is instantaneously at rest in these coordinates, so uμ=(u0,0,0,0) with u0=dt/dτ≈1 for v≪c. Write the spatial component of the geodesic equation for this particle and show it reduces to dt2d2xi=−∂iΦ.
((d)) Take Φ(r)=−GM/r, the potential of a point mass M, and apply the result of part (c) at the surface of a body with M=1.99×1030kg and radius R=6.96×108m (the Sun's mass and radius). Find the magnitude of the coordinate acceleration ∣d2xi/dt2∣ of a dust particle instantaneously at rest at that radius. Use G=6.674×10−11Nm2kg−2.
