Problem
Consider the spatially flat (K=0) FRW metric in comoving Cartesian coordinates, ds2=−c2dt2+a(t)2(dx2+dy2+dz2), filled with a comoving perfect fluid of energy density ρ(t) and pressure p(t): four-velocity uμ=(1,0,0,0) and Tμν=(ρ+p)uμuν/c2+pgμν.
((a)) Using the geodesic Lagrangian L=−c2t˙2+a2(x˙2+y˙2+z˙2) and its Euler-Lagrange equations, show that the only nonzero Christoffel symbols are Γ0ij=(aa˙/c2)δij and Γi0j=Γij0=Hδji, with H≡a˙/a.
((b)) Hence show R00=−3a¨/a and Rij=c−2(aa¨+2a˙2)δij, and that R=c26(aa¨+H2).
((c)) Assemble G00 and Gij, and equate them to (8πG/c4)T00 and (8πG/c4)Tij to obtain the two Friedmann equations for this universe.
((d)) State which of the two equations shows that pressure contributes to gravity, and use it to say why radiation (p=ρ/3) decelerates the expansion twice as strongly as dust (p=0) at the same energy density.
