Problem

For a particular optical transition in atomic lead, the isotope shift of 208Pb^{208}\mathrm{Pb} relative to 206Pb^{206}\mathrm{Pb} is measured, and after the mass shift has been subtracted the field shift is δν=2.42 GHz\delta\nu = 2.42\,\mathrm{GHz}. For this transition the electronic factor relating frequency shift to nuclear size change is F=20.0 GHz fm−2F = 20.0\,\mathrm{GHz\,fm^{-2}}, defined by δν=F δ⟨r2⟩\delta\nu = F\,\delta\langle r^2\rangle. Find the change in mean square charge radius δ⟨r2⟩=⟨r2⟩208−⟨r2⟩206\delta\langle r^2\rangle = \langle r^2\rangle_{208} - \langle r^2\rangle_{206}.
