The Nucleus Resolved, Ch Neutrons: the reagent with no barrier

Problem

A dosimeter contains a 1/v1/v absorber whose cross section is σ0=950 b\sigma_0 = 950\,\mathrm{b} at v0=2200 m s−1v_0 = 2200\,\mathrm{m\,s^{-1}} (the standard 0.0253 eV0.0253\,\mathrm{eV} point). It sits in a thermal neutron population of density n=1.0×108 cm−3n = 1.0\times10^{8}\,\mathrm{cm^{-3}}, Maxwellian at T=350 KT = 350\,\mathrm{K}. Air attenuation and self-shielding of the dosimeter are ignored. ((a)) Find the reaction rate per absorbing nucleus. ((b)) Find the flux-weighted average cross section σˉ\bar\sigma at 350 K350\,\mathrm{K}, and compare it with the tabulated value σ0\sigma_0.
