The Nucleus Resolved, Ch Neutrons: the reagent with no barrier
Problem
A steady fission-like neutron source of strength S=8.0×104cm−3s−1 sits inside a large block of beryllium, treated as an infinite, non-absorbing, uniform moderator with ξΣs=0.154cm−1.
((a)) From a lethargy balance, derive the flux spectrum ϕ(E) below the source energy and evaluate it at E=2.0eV.
((b)) A tritium-breeding tile containing lithium-6, whose (n,α) cross section follows the 1/v law with σ0=940b at v0=2200ms−1, sits where the neutrons have thermalised into a Maxwellian at temperature T. Using the flux-weighted average σˉ(T)=(π/2)(T0/T)1/2σ0 (with T0=293.6K) and the mean speed vˉ(T)=(2/π)v0(T/T0)1/2, derive algebraically that the product vˉ(T)σˉ(T) equals v0σ0 for every T, and hence that the tritium-production rate per lithium-6 atom, nvˉ(T)σˉ(T), is temperature-independent. Evaluate vˉ and σˉ at T=600K and check the product against v0σ0.
