Problem

A beam of 20Ne^{20}\mathrm{Ne} ions has emittance ε=0.8 mm mrad\varepsilon = 0.8\,\mathrm{mm\,mrad}. ((a)) It is focused to a waist of rms size 0.05 mm0.05\,\mathrm{mm} on a 90Zr^{90}\mathrm{Zr} target. Find the rms angular divergence this focus forces on the beam. ((b)) Using R=1.3(A11/3+A21/3) fmR = 1.3(A_1^{1/3}+A_2^{1/3})\,\mathrm{fm}, compute the Coulomb barrier BCB_C (centre-of-mass frame) for 20Ne+90Zr^{20}\mathrm{Ne}+^{90}\mathrm{Zr}. ((c)) Find the centre-of-mass energy below which a head-on collision keeps the distance of closest approach at least 5 fm5\,\mathrm{fm} outside touching, i.e. dmin⁡≥R+5 fmd_{\min}\ge R+5\,\mathrm{fm}.
