The Nucleus Resolved, Ch Fusion: the cross section computed and the power balance made honest
Problem
A deuterium-tritium blanket loses 22% of its incident 14.1MeV neutrons to structure, ports and parasitic capture before they can be absorbed on lithium. A beryllium multiplier layer increases the neutron population by a factor of 1.35 (i.e. 1.35 neutrons emerge from the multiplier per neutron incident on it) before the lithium absorbs them.
((a)) Calculate the tritium breeding ratio (tritons produced per fusion neutron) of this blanket.
((b)) State whether the blanket is self-sufficient in tritium.
