Problem

Use λ=K−23μ\lambda = K - \tfrac23\mu, ν=λ2(λ+μ)\nu = \dfrac{\lambda}{2(\lambda+\mu)} and E=2μ(1+ν)E = 2\mu(1+\nu). ((a)) A basalt sample has bulk modulus K=60 GPaK = 60\,\mathrm{GPa} and shear modulus μ=25 GPa\mu = 25\,\mathrm{GPa}. Find λ\lambda, ν\nu and EE. ((b)) Water has bulk modulus K=2.2 GPaK = 2.2\,\mathrm{GPa} and, being a fluid, μ=0\mu = 0; treat it as the limit of an isotropic solid whose shear modulus falls to zero at fixed KK. Find the limiting λ\lambda, ν\nu and EE, and say in words why this value of ν\nu is the largest an isotropic medium can have.
