The Solid Earth, Ch Rays and travel times: from arrivals to a layered planet

Problem

A vertically travelling PcP wave (P reflected once off the core-mantle boundary) is observed to have a two-way travel time of 8.60 minutes8.60\,\mathrm{minutes}. Model the mantle as a single layer with average P speed vP=11.5 km s−1v_P = 11.5\,\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}}, and take the Earth's radius as a=6371 kma = 6371\,\mathrm{km}. ((a)) Find the depth to the core-mantle boundary implied by this time. ((b)) Find the core radius rcr_c.
