The Solid Earth, Ch Rays and travel times: from arrivals to a layered planet

Problem

A marine seismic source fires a P ray at 20∘20^\circ from the vertical through three flat, welded layers: a water layer with v1=1.5 km s−1v_1 = 1.5\,\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}} and thickness h1=0.05 kmh_1 = 0.05\,\mathrm{km}, a sediment layer with v2=2.0 km s−1v_2 = 2.0\,\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}} and h2=0.5 kmh_2 = 0.5\,\mathrm{km}, and a basement layer with v3=4.0 km s−1v_3 = 4.0\,\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}} and h3=1.0 kmh_3 = 1.0\,\mathrm{km}. ((a)) Find the angle of incidence in the sediment and in the basement. ((b)) Find the total horizontal distance and total travel time from the source to the base of the basement layer.
