Problem

A beam of spin-12\tfrac12 atoms is prepared with a biased coin: each atom, independently, is put in ∣ ⁣↑⟩|\!\uparrow\rangle with probability 34\tfrac34 and in ∣ ⁣↓⟩|\!\downarrow\rangle with probability 14\tfrac14. A colleague says the beam is simply in the state ∣χ⟩=3 ∣ ⁣↑⟩+∣ ⁣↓⟩2,|\chi\rangle=\frac{\sqrt3\,|\!\uparrow\rangle+|\!\downarrow\rangle}{2}, because a magnet along zz gives up three times in four for both. Use ∣+x⟩=12(∣ ⁣↑⟩+∣ ⁣↓⟩)|{+x}\rangle=\frac{1}{\sqrt2}(|\!\uparrow\rangle+|\!\downarrow\rangle). ((a)) Check the colleague's claim about the zz statistics. ((b)) Compute P(Sx=+ℏ/2)P(S_x=+\hbar/2) for the beam and for ∣χ⟩|\chi\rangle. ((c)) Say what is wrong with the colleague's argument.
