Problem

A beam of spin-1/2 particles is prepared, atom by atom, in ∣ψ⟩=12(∣↑⟩+eiφ∣↓⟩)|\psi\rangle=\frac{1}{\sqrt2}\big(|{\uparrow}\rangle+e^{i\varphi}|{\downarrow}\rangle\big) with an unknown relative phase φ\varphi. Use ∣+x⟩=12(∣↑⟩+∣↓⟩)|{+x}\rangle=\frac{1}{\sqrt2}(|{\uparrow}\rangle+|{\downarrow}\rangle) and ∣+y⟩=12(∣↑⟩+i∣↓⟩)|{+y}\rangle=\frac{1}{\sqrt2}(|{\uparrow}\rangle+i|{\downarrow}\rangle). ((a)) Find P(Sx=+ℏ/2)P(S_x=+\hbar/2) and P(Sy=+ℏ/2)P(S_y=+\hbar/2) as functions of φ\varphi. ((b)) Long runs give the fraction 0.2500.250 of +ℏ/2+\hbar/2 outcomes along xx and 0.9330.933 along yy. Find φ\varphi in [0,2π)[0,2\pi), and explain why the xx run alone would not fix it. ((c)) Show that no value of φ\varphi gives 12\tfrac12 along both xx and yy, and hence that one of these two magnets always tells this beam from a fifty-fifty mixture of ∣↑⟩|{\uparrow}\rangle and ∣↓⟩|{\downarrow}\rangle.
