Problem

A spin-12\tfrac12 particle is prepared in the state ∣ψ⟩=3∣ ⁣↑⟩+4∣ ⁣↓⟩5,|\psi\rangle=\frac{3|\!\uparrow\rangle+4|\!\downarrow\rangle}{5}, written in the S^z\hat S_z eigenbasis {∣ ⁣↑⟩,∣ ⁣↓⟩}\{|\!\uparrow\rangle,|\!\downarrow\rangle\} with eigenvalues ±ℏ/2\pm\hbar/2. The S^x\hat S_x eigenstates are ∣+⟩x=∣ ⁣↑⟩+∣ ⁣↓⟩2,∣−⟩x=∣ ⁣↑⟩−∣ ⁣↓⟩2.|+\rangle_x=\frac{|\!\uparrow\rangle+|\!\downarrow\rangle}{\sqrt2},\qquad |-\rangle_x=\frac{|\!\uparrow\rangle-|\!\downarrow\rangle}{\sqrt2}. ((a)) Using the Born rule in the zz-representation, give P(Sz=+ℏ/2)P(S_z=+\hbar/2) and P(Sz=−ℏ/2)P(S_z=-\hbar/2). ((b)) Translate ∣ψ⟩|\psi\rangle into the xx-representation by computing ⟨+∣xψ⟩\langle+|_x\psi\rangle and ⟨−∣xψ⟩\langle-|_x\psi\rangle, and hence give P(Sx=+ℏ/2)P(S_x=+\hbar/2) and P(Sx=−ℏ/2)P(S_x=-\hbar/2).
