Problem
An electron (m=9.11×10−31kg) is confined to an infinite square well of width L=0.80nm, with ψn(x)=2/Lsin(nπx/L) and En=n2π2ℏ2/(2mL2). At t=0 it is prepared in Ψ(x,0)=[ψ1(x)+ψ2(x)]/2. (a) Using cn(t)=cn(0)e−iEnt/ℏ, write Ψ(x,t) as a global phase times [ψ1(x)+eiα(t)ψ2(x)]/2, and identify α(t). (b) Using ψ1(L−x)=ψ1(x) and ψ2(L−x)=−ψ2(x), find the first time t∗>0 at which ∣Ψ(x,t)∣2 is the mirror image of ∣Ψ(x,0)∣2 about x=L/2, and evaluate t∗ in femtoseconds. (c) Prepare instead [ψ1(x)+ψ3(x)]/2. Show that its density is symmetric about x=L/2 at every time, and find ∣Ψ(L/2,t)∣2 to show that the density nonetheless changes.
