Problem
An electron of mass me=9.109×10−31kg is confined to an infinite square well of width L=2.00nm, with impenetrable walls at x=0 and x=L. The energy eigenstates ∣n⟩ satisfy ⟨x∣n⟩=2/Lsin(nπx/L) and H^∣n⟩=En∣n⟩ with En=n2π2ℏ2/(2meL2), where ℏ=1.0546×10−34Js. The electron is prepared in the normalised state
∣ψ⟩=51∣1⟩+52∣2⟩.
((a)) Let ∣ψ′⟩=eiπ/4∣ψ⟩. Compute the probabilities of finding energies E1 and E2 for both ∣ψ⟩ and ∣ψ′⟩, and compute ⟨H^⟩ for both. State what this shows about ∣ψ⟩ and ∣ψ′⟩ as physical states.
((b)) Insert the resolution of the identity ∑n∣n⟩⟨n∣=1 into ⟨ψ∣H^∣ψ⟩ to write the energy expectation value as a sum over n, then evaluate it numerically in electronvolts.
