Problem

A proton of mass m=1.67×10−27 kgm = 1.67\times10^{-27}\,\mathrm{kg} is held in a harmonic trap of angular frequency ω=2.0×1014 rad s−1\omega = 2.0\times10^{14}\,\mathrm{rad\,s^{-1}} and occupies the number state ∣n=3⟩|n=3\rangle. ((a)) Using x^=ℏ/2mω (a^+a^†)\hat x = \sqrt{\hbar/2m\omega}\,(\hat a + \hat a^\dagger) and counting which terms in x^2\hat x^2 survive between ⟨3∣\langle 3| and ∣3⟩|3\rangle, write ⟨3∣x^2∣3⟩\langle 3|\hat x^2|3\rangle in terms of ℏ\hbar, mm, ω\omega and n=3n=3. ((b)) Evaluate it numerically.
