Problem

A superconducting circuit consists of an inductor of inductance L=1.00 nHL=1.00\,\text{nH} and a capacitor of capacitance C=1.00 pFC=1.00\,\text{pF}, joined to form a single closed loop with no resistance. Let Q^\hat Q be the charge on the capacitor and Φ^\hat\Phi the flux through the inductor; in the quantum treatment of the circuit these obey the canonical commutator [Q^,Φ^]=iℏ[\hat Q,\hat\Phi]=i\hbar, exactly as x^\hat x and p^\hat p do for a particle, and the circuit's energy operator is H^=Φ^22L+Q^22C\hat H=\dfrac{\hat\Phi^2}{2L}+\dfrac{\hat Q^2}{2C}. ((a)) Say which of the mechanical oscillator's symbols (x^,p^,m)(\hat x,\hat p,m) correspond to (Q^,Φ^,L)(\hat Q,\hat\Phi,L), define ladder operators a^,a^†\hat a,\hat a^\dagger for this circuit by the same construction used for the mechanical oscillator, with ω=1/LC\omega=1/\sqrt{LC}, verify [a^,a^†]=1[\hat a,\hat a^\dagger]=1 follows from [Q^,Φ^]=iℏ[\hat Q,\hat\Phi]=i\hbar, and state what the eigenvalue nn of a^†a^\hat a^\dagger\hat a counts physically for this circuit. ((b)) Compute ω\omega in rad s−1^{-1}, the energy quantum ℏω\hbar\omega in electronvolts, and the zero-point energy, for the given LL and CC.
