Problem

An ion of mass m=2.85×10−25 kgm = 2.85\times10^{-25}\,\mathrm{kg} sits in a trap with angular frequency ω=2π×1.10 MHz\omega = 2\pi\times1.10\,\mathrm{MHz}. Its motional state is a coherent state ∣α⟩|\alpha\rangle with α=2−i\alpha = 2 - i (a dimensionless complex number fixing the mean position and momentum, in units where x^=ℏ/2mω(a^+a^†)\hat x = \sqrt{\hbar/2m\omega}(\hat a+\hat a^\dagger)). ((a)) Using a^∣α⟩=α∣α⟩\hat a|\alpha\rangle=\alpha|\alpha\rangle, compute Δx\Delta x and Δp\Delta p for ∣α⟩|\alpha\rangle, and show that neither depends on α\alpha itself. ((b)) Check the generalised uncertainty relation from Chapter 5, Δx Δp≥ℏ/2\Delta x\,\Delta p \ge \hbar/2, against your numbers and state whether ∣α⟩|\alpha\rangle saturates it.
