Problem

A particle of mass mm falls in a uniform gravitational field, with potential V(x)=−mgxV(x)=-mgx and xx measured downward. (a) Write the short-time factor K(xj,ϵ;xj−1,0)K(x_j,\epsilon;x_{j-1},0) for this potential, and identify the Lagrangian in its exponent. (b) Put x=xcl+yx=x_{\rm cl}+y with y(0)=y(t)=0y(0)=y(t)=0. Show that the action is exactly Scl+12∫0tmy˙2 dt′S_{\rm cl}+\tfrac12\int_0^tm\dot y^2\,dt', and hence that the fluctuation factor is the free particle's. (c) Find SclS_{\rm cl} and write K(x,t;x′,0)K(x,t;x',0). Check that it reduces to the free propagator as g→0g\to0.
