Problem

An electron (charge q=−eq=-e, mass me=9.109×10−31 kgm_e=9.109\times10^{-31}\,\mathrm{kg}) moves in the plane across a uniform field B⃗=Bz^\vec B=B\hat z, B=2.0 TB=2.0\,\mathrm T, when a uniform electric field E⃗=Ex^\vec E=E\hat x, E=1.0×104 V m−1E=1.0\times10^{4}\,\mathrm{V\,m^{-1}}, is switched on. With ϕem=−Ex\phi_{\rm em}=-Ex the transverse Hamiltonian becomes H^=π^x2+π^y22me−qEx^.\hat H=\frac{\hat\pi_x^2+\hat\pi_y^2}{2m_e}-qE\hat x. Ignore spin and treat the motion as non-relativistic. ((a)) Write x^\hat x in terms of the guiding-centre coordinate X^=x^+π^y/(qB)\hat X=\hat x+\hat\pi_y/(qB) (with Y^=y^−π^x/(qB)\hat Y=\hat y-\hat\pi_x/(qB)) and π^y\hat\pi_y, and hence write H^\hat H in terms of H^⊥\hat H_\perp, X^\hat X and π^y\hat\pi_y. ((b)) Using the Heisenberg equation of motion, the guiding-centre commutator [X^,Y^]=−iℏ/(qB)[\hat X,\hat Y]=-i\hbar/(qB) and the fact that X^\hat X and Y^\hat Y commute with π^x\hat\pi_x and π^y\hat\pi_y, find dX^/dtd\hat X/dt and dY^/dtd\hat Y/dt. Show that the guiding centre drifts with a velocity that depends on none of qq, mem_e and ℏ\hbar, and give its direction. ((c)) Give the drift speed in m s−1\mathrm{m\,s^{-1}}, and the distance the guiding centre moves during one cyclotron period 2π/ωc2\pi/\omega_c, in nm.
