Problem

A sketch shows a convex curve y(x)y(x) for x>0x > 0 together with many of its tangent lines. Measuring the slope ss and the intercept on the yy axis of each tangent drawn, every member of the family is found to obey y=sx−34s4/3,s>0,y = sx - \tfrac34 s^{4/3}, \qquad s > 0, so that the sketch gives the intercept as a function of the slope. (xx, yy and ss are pure numbers here.) ((a)) Write down ϕ(s)\phi(s), the Legendre transform of yy, reading it off the family of tangents. ((b)) Recover xx as a function of ss from ϕ\phi. ((c)) Hence find the curve y(x)y(x) itself. ((d)) Give the coordinates (x,y)(x,y) of the point at which the tangent of slope s=8.00s = 8.00 touches the curve.
