Problem

A rigid thermally insulated vessel is divided by a thin partition. One side holds 2.00 mol2.00\,\mathrm{mol} of helium, the other holds 2.00 mol2.00\,\mathrm{mol} of neon; both gases are at the same temperature T=300 KT = 300\,\mathrm{K} and the same pressure p=1.00 barp = 1.00\,\mathrm{bar}, so the two compartment volumes are in proportion to the amounts of gas. Both gases are ideal, they do not react, and the partition is removed so that they mix completely. Calculate the entropy of mixing. Take R=8.314 J mol−1 K−1R = 8.314\,\mathrm{J\,mol^{-1}\,K^{-1}}.
