Problem
On the p-T diagram of water the triple point is at 273.16K and 612Pa and the critical point at 647K and 22.1MPa. At the pressure 400Pa the solid-vapour (sublimation) line is crossed at 268K. At the pressure 101.3kPa the melting line is crossed at 273.15K and the liquid-vapour line at 373.15K. A sample of ice is warmed slowly, the pressure being held fixed throughout, so that the sample stays in equilibrium at every stage. How many phase boundaries does the sample cross in each case?
((a)) Warmed from 200K to 400K at a fixed pressure of 400Pa.
((b)) Warmed from 250K to 400K at a fixed pressure of 101.3kPa.
