Problem

A mountain hut stands where the barometric pressure is 84.0 kPa84.0\,\mathrm{kPa}. On a winter morning the air outside the hut is at 6 ∘C6\,{}^\circ\mathrm{C}; the same hut in summer has outside air at 22 ∘C22\,{}^\circ\mathrm{C}, with the same barometric pressure. Water is boiled in an open pan. Take the vapour-pressure curve integrated with a constant latent heat of vaporisation L=40.7 kJ mol−1L = 40.7\,\mathrm{kJ\,mol^{-1}}, anchored on the sea-level point 101.3 kPa101.3\,\mathrm{kPa} at 373.15 K373.15\,\mathrm{K}. The vapour is treated as an ideal gas and the molar volume of the liquid is neglected beside that of the vapour. Use R=8.314 J mol−1 K−1R = 8.314\,\mathrm{J\,mol^{-1}\,K^{-1}} and 0 ∘C=273.15 K0\,{}^\circ\mathrm{C} = 273.15\,\mathrm{K}. ((a)) Find the temperature at which the water boils on the winter morning. ((b)) Find the temperature at which it boils on the summer day.
