Problem

A single molecular ion trapped in a solid has four non-degenerate states, of energies 00, ε\varepsilon, 2ε2\varepsilon and 3ε3\varepsilon. The ion is weakly coupled to the surrounding solid, which acts as a reservoir at temperature TT, and the temperature is such that kBT=1.5 εk_BT = 1.5\,\varepsilon. ((a)) Write down the partition function ZZ as a number and find the probability of each of the four states. ((b)) Using U=−(∂ln⁡Z/∂β)VU = -(\partial\ln Z/\partial\beta)_V with β=1/kBT\beta = 1/k_BT, find the mean energy UU in units of ε\varepsilon. ((c)) A student says "the ground state is the most probable state, so the mean energy of the ion must be 00". State the value of UU your calculation gives and say in one sentence why the most probable state does not fix the mean.
