Thermal Physics, Ch The classical ideal gas from the partition function
Problem
A figure plots CV/NkB for dilute carbon monoxide gas (CO, treated as an ideal gas at every temperature shown, an idealisation at the lowest ones) against log10(T/K) from 1K to 4000K. The plotted curve is described completely by:flat at 1.50 for T≤1.5K;rising steeply between about 2K and 10K;flat at 2.50 from about 15K to about 600K;rising again above about 800K, passing through 3.41 at 3000K. For CO the characteristic temperatures are θrot=2.8K and θvib=3120K. Take R=8.314JK−1mol−1. Say which internal motion switches on at each of the two steps, quoting the characteristic temperature that places it there, and then:
((a)) read CV/NkB off the plot at 1.2K, at 200K and at 3000K;
((b)) convert the 200K reading into a molar heat capacity CV;
((c)) state the vibrational contribution to CV per molecule at 3000K, in units of kB.
