Problem

A defect on the surface of an oxide ceramic binds at most one oxygen molecule. The empty site has energy zero; the single occupied state has energy −ε0-\varepsilon_0 with ε0=0.80 eV\varepsilon_0 = 0.80\,\mathrm{eV}. The defect is weakly coupled to the surrounding oxygen, which is a reservoir at T=500 KT = 500\,\mathrm{K} with chemical potential μ=−0.70 eV\mu = -0.70\,\mathrm{eV}. In the same oxygen (T=500 KT = 500\,\mathrm{K}, pressure p=1.0 Pap = 1.0\,\mathrm{Pa}, treated as an ideal gas) consider a fixed volume V=1.0 mm3V = 1.0\,\mathrm{mm^3} marked out inside the gas, with imaginary walls so that it is open to its surroundings. ((a)) the grand partition function Z\mathcal Z of the defect site; ((b)) its mean occupation ⟨N⟩\langle N\rangle; ((c)) its grand potential ΦG\Phi_G, in joules; ((d)) the mean number of molecules in the marked volume; ((e)) the relative number fluctuation σN/⟨N⟩\sigma_N/\langle N\rangle there. Take kB=1.381×10−23 J K−1k_B = 1.381\times10^{-23}\,\mathrm{J\,K^{-1}} and 1 eV=1.602×10−19 J1\,\mathrm{eV} = 1.602\times10^{-19}\,\mathrm{J}.
