Problem

An electric hotplate ring is a disc of diameter 190 mm190\,\mathrm{mm} glowing dull red at about 700 K700\,\mathrm{K}; the kitchen around it is at 293 K293\,\mathrm{K}. Treat the ring and the kitchen as black surfaces, treat the ring as a flat disc radiating from its upper face only, and ignore convection and conduction. ((a)) Estimate the net power the ring loses by radiation. ((b)) A lidded pan on the ring encloses about 0.50 L0.50\,\mathrm{L} of space. Treating that space as a cavity at 700 K700\,\mathrm{K}, estimate how many electromagnetic standing-wave modes it holds below 20 THz20\,\mathrm{THz}, counting both polarisations, and estimate the total energy those modes would hold if each held kBTk_BT. Two significant figures are enough. Use σSB=5.67×10−8 W m−2 K−4\sigma_{\rm SB} = 5.67\times10^{-8}\,\mathrm{W\,m^{-2}\,K^{-4}}, c=2.998×108 m s−1c = 2.998\times10^{8}\,\mathrm{m\,s^{-1}} and kB=1.381×10−23 J K−1k_B = 1.381\times10^{-23}\,\mathrm{J\,K^{-1}}.
