Problem

A telephoto pair consists of a converging thin lens f1=100 mmf_1 = 100\ \mathrm{mm} and a diverging thin lens f2=−50 mmf_2 = -50\ \mathrm{mm}, both in air, separated by d=60 mmd = 60\ \mathrm{mm}. Build the system matrix from the front lens plane to the rear lens plane, M=(10−1/f21)(1d01)(10−1/f11)\mathbf{M} = \begin{pmatrix}1&0\\-1/f_2&1\end{pmatrix}\begin{pmatrix}1&d\\0&1\end{pmatrix}\begin{pmatrix}1&0\\-1/f_1&1\end{pmatrix}. ((a)) Find the effective focal length of the pair. ((b)) Find the back focal distance, measured from the rear lens plane. ((c)) Locate the front principal plane relative to the front lens plane. ((d)) Locate the rear principal plane relative to the rear lens plane.
