What an Instrument Can See, Ch Aberrations: the phase written on the pupil

Problem

A thin BK7 singlet has focal length f=80 mmf = 80\,\mathrm{mm} and works at f/5f/5 (aperture stop at the lens). At its best-form bending the third-order wavefront aberration coefficient is W040=3.5W_{040} = 3.5 waves at λ=587.6 nm\lambda = 587.6\,\mathrm{nm}, defined so that the edge-of-pupil wavefront error is W040λW_{040}\lambda. ((a)) Find the longitudinal spherical aberration, using LSA=16 (f/#)2 W040λ\mathrm{LSA} = 16\,(f/\#)^2\,W_{040}\lambda. ((b)) Find the transverse spherical aberration (the radius of the marginal-ray blur at the paraxial focal plane), using TSA=8 (f/#) W040λ\mathrm{TSA} = 8\,(f/\#)\,W_{040}\lambda.
