Problem

A source of spectral width Δλ=0.5 nm\Delta\lambda = 0.5\ \mathrm{nm} (FWHM, centred at 1550 nm) launches pulses into 40 km40\ \mathrm{km} of standard single-mode fibre whose dispersion parameter at this wavelength is D=17 ps nm−1 km−1D = 17\ \mathrm{ps\,nm^{-1}\,km^{-1}}. Assuming the pulse spreading is dominated by this material and waveguide dispersion (no other broadening mechanism), estimate the temporal spread acquired by the pulse over the fibre.
