Problem

A narrow ultraviolet absorption line at λ1=121 nm\lambda_1 = 121\,\mathrm{nm} contributes, through the Kramers-Kronig relation, a term to ϵ1−1≈n2−1\epsilon_1-1\approx n^2-1, so that on its own it gives n2(λ)=1+Bλ2λ2−λ12,n^2(\lambda) = 1 + \frac{B\lambda^2}{\lambda^2 - \lambda_1^2}, valid away from the line, with dimensionless line strength B=0.0225B = 0.0225. Use this to find the refractive index at λ=193 nm\lambda = 193\,\mathrm{nm}, an excimer-laser wavelength used in lithography.
