Problem

A thin, free-standing, non-absorbing film of index nf=1.38n_f=1.38 is suspended in air (n=1n=1) on both sides. Its thickness is a quarter of a wavelength measured in the film, d=λ0/(4nf)d=\lambda_0/(4n_f), for the incident vacuum wavelength λ0\lambda_0. Light meets it at normal incidence. ((a)) Compose the two interface matrices and the propagation matrix for the layer to obtain the slab's amplitude reflection coefficient rslabr_{\text{slab}} in closed form. ((b)) Evaluate the slab's reflectance R\mathcal{R}.
