Problem

A silver film in air is illuminated at λ0=600 nm\lambda_0=600\,\mathrm{nm}, where the silver permittivity is ϵ~m=−8.88+1.44i\tilde\epsilon_m=-8.88+1.44i (ϵd=1\epsilon_d=1 for air). A diffraction grating of period Λ\Lambda is ruled into the silver surface so that light arriving from air at normal incidence (θ=0\theta=0) couples into the surface plasmon polariton through its first diffracted order (m=1m=1). Using Re ksp\mathrm{Re}\,k_{\mathrm{sp}} computed to lowest order in the loss, find the grating period Λ\Lambda that satisfies the coupling condition.
