Problem

A defect cavity is built from a half-wave silica spacer sandwiched between two tantala-silica quarter-wave mirrors (nH=2.08n_H=2.08, nL=1.444n_L=1.444), each mirror having 8 periods. At λ0=1550 nm\lambda_0=1550\,\mathrm{nm} the transmission peak has a measured quality factor Q≈1400Q\approx1400. If two more periods are added to each mirror (10 periods each), estimate the new QQ, using the rule, found in the text, that QQ scales by a factor (nH/nL)2≈2.1(n_H/n_L)^2\approx2.1 for each additional period added to both mirrors.
