Problem

Silver behaves as a Drude metal in the near infrared. At a vacuum wavelength of 800 nm800\text{ nm} its complex relative permittivity against air (ϵd=1\epsilon_d = 1) is ϵ~m=−25+2i\tilde\epsilon_m = -25 + 2i. ((a)) Find ksp/k0k_{\mathrm{sp}}/k_0 from ksp=k0ϵmϵd/(ϵm+ϵd)k_{\mathrm{sp}} = k_0\sqrt{\epsilon_m\epsilon_d/(\epsilon_m+\epsilon_d)}. ((b)) Compute the intensity propagation length 1/(2 Im ksp)1/(2\,\mathrm{Im}\,k_{\mathrm{sp}}). ((c)) Compute the field decay length (1/e1/e in amplitude) into the air and into the metal.
