Problem
A one-dimensional dielectric mirror is built from alternating non-absorbing layers of index nH and nL, each exactly a quarter-wave thick at a design angular frequency ω0 (centre wavelength λ0), lit at normal incidence. Each layer has characteristic matrix Mj(δj)=(cosδjinjsinδjisinδj/njcosδj) with δj its phase thickness. (a) Show that at a general frequency ω near ω0 the phase thickness of both layers is the same, δH=δL=δ=(π/2)(ω/ω0), and that the period matrix MΛ=MH(δ)ML(δ) has half-trace Δ(δ)=1−sin2δ[1+21(nLnH+nHnL)]. (b) Using the fact that a genuine Bloch wave exists only while ∣Δ∣≤1, show that the fractional width of the stop band nearest ω0 is ω0Δω=π4arcsin(nH+nLnH−nL). (c) A stack of titanium dioxide (nH=2.40) and magnesium fluoride (nL=1.38) quarter-wave layers is designed for a centre wavelength λ0=550nm. Find the wavelengths of the two edges of the stop band.
