The Four-Current Density
Magnetism as a Relativistic Effect just spent an entire article tracking two charge densities through a frame change — proper densities, velocity addition, compound Lorentz factors, seven careful steps to learn that a neutral wire looks charged from a moving seat. This article builds the machine that does all of that in two lines. The trick is the one the chapter keeps applying: stop transforming quantities one at a time and find the four-component object they secretly form. Charge density and current density — kept in separate chapters since electrostatics — are the time and space components of a single four-vector, , and every "paradox" of moving charge distributions is just this arrow viewed from different angles. The construction rests on an experimental pillar so familiar it is easy to miss: electric charge is Lorentz invariant. Not "conserved" — invariant: every inertial observer counts the same coulombs on the same body, no anywhere. (Energy, by contrast, is conserved but famously not invariant.) Matter testifies to this with absurd precision — hydrogen molecules and helium atoms are both neutral to parts in , though their protons move at wildly different speeds. Granted invariance, the rest is geometry: charge per contracted volume picks up a , moving charge is a current, and the package — proper density times four-velocity — is a certified four-vector by the ladder principle of Proper Time and Four-Velocity. The payoff is structural. Charge conservation, an experimental law wearing 3+1 clothing since The Continuity Equation, becomes the one-symbol statement — a Lorentz scalar equated to zero, true in every frame if true in one. That is the covariant closure the E6 article promised this chapter would deliver. And is not merely tidy bookkeeping: it is the source of everything that follows — the four-potential obeys , the field tensor obeys , and electrodynamics becomes a theory of one arrow sourcing another.
- Charge density and current density are one object: , the four-current density, transforming under boosts exactly like .
- Its four-vector credentials are earned microscopically: — proper charge density (an invariant scalar, because charge is invariant and proper volume is agreed) times the four-velocity.
- Charge conservation is the vanishing four-divergence — a frame-proof scalar equation that expands to the familiar , delivering the covariant closure promised by The Continuity Equation.
- Boosts mix the components: , — static charge acquires current, neutral current acquires charge. The wire of Magnetism as a Relativistic Effect is this transformation, once.
- The invariant classifies sources: timelike for any single-sign flow (a rest frame exists), spacelike for a neutral wire (no frame kills the current, but frames disagree on the sign of ).
- Total charge is a Lorentz scalar even though is not: the from density cancels the from volume contraction.
- Key idea: package charge and current as the four-vector , and charge conservation, density transformation, and the sourcing of fields all become one line of index grammar each.
Charge density and current density are the timelike and spacelike parts of one four-vector ; charge conservation is its vanishing four-divergence .
Where this lives today
The four-current's conservation law, humble as it looks, is the prototype for the deepest organizing principle in modern physics. In quantum field theory, Noether's theorem manufactures a conserved current with for every continuous symmetry — and the electromagnetic is the Noether current of phase rotations, its conservation tied to gauge symmetry itself. When theorists check a proposed interaction, "is the current conserved?" is the first sanity gate, because coupling the photon to a non-conserved current breaks the theory's consistency outright. The pattern this article built — package the densities, contract with , demand zero — is repeated verbatim for energy-momentum (the stress-energy tensor, later in this chapter), baryon number, and every charge in the Standard Model. On the practical side, every plasma code and accelerator simulation maintains as its bookkeeping backbone: particle-in-cell methods are notorious for violating at the grid level, and entire families of "charge-conserving deposition" algorithms exist to enforce (4) exactly in discrete form — otherwise spurious fields accumulate and the simulated plasma slowly detonates. That a numerical-analysis community spends careers protecting a one-line identity from round-off is a fair measure of how load-bearing the identity is.
Origins · 1 minHendrik Antoon Lorentz and how this was discovered
Lorentz's electron theory (1892 onward) was the first to construct and microscopically — as the smoothed density and flux of discrete charged particles — rather than treat them as continuum primitives. Chasing the electrodynamics of moving bodies through that lens, he discovered piece by piece the transformation rules that now bear his name: local time, the contraction hypothesis, and by 1904 the full transformations under which Maxwell's equations keep their form — including, remarkably, the correct mixing of charge density with current density. What he lacked was the reinterpretation: for Lorentz these were properties of matter moving through a real ether, not of spacetime. Einstein supplied the kinematics in 1905 and Minkowski the geometry in 1908, at which point Lorentz's hard-won transformation rules for became one line: it is a four-vector. His name survives on the transformation, the factor , and the force law — the covariant is his life's bookkeeping, geometrized.
The physical picture
Watch a line of charges sitting at rest. You measure charge density and zero current. Now stroll past them: the same charges drift backward in your frame — you measure a current, and (length contraction) a slightly enhanced density. Nothing about the charges changed; your split of one physical situation into "how much charge" and "how much flow" changed. This is precisely the situation of time and space before Minkowski: quantities that mix under boosts are not two things but two shadows of one thing. The four-current is that thing for electric sources. Two experimental facts anchor the construction, and it pays to keep them distinct. Charge conservation says the total charge in a region changes only by flow through its boundary — the continuity equation, established on Maxwell-consistency grounds in The Continuity Equation. Charge invariance is stronger and independent: the charge of a body is the same number in every inertial frame. Nature enforces it spectacularly. A helium atom's two protons rattle inside the nucleus with momenta around 235 MeV/c — — while a hydrogen molecule's two protons amble at chemical speeds. If charge scaled with the way energy does, helium would carry a few percent of a proton charge and tabletop matter would explode electrostatically; experiment finds both species neutral to better than a part in . Charge is a count, not a projection: invariant, quantized, scalar. Invariance is what lets density do the interesting thing. Fix a blob of charge in its own rest frame, occupying proper volume : proper density . A frame that sees the blob move at sees the same (invariance) in a volume contracted along the motion to — so , and it sees the charge translate: . Both effects are pure kinematics riding on one invariant. Assemble them and a familiar shape appears: — an invariant scalar times the four-velocity. The four-current is the four-momentum construction all over again (: invariant mass times four-velocity), and the analogy runs deep: tags a particle with its rest mass; tags a flow with its proper density.
The math: building the arrow, then differentiating it
The definition and its credentials
Gather the sources of electrodynamics into one quadruple:
where: is charge per volume and charge per area per time, so the factor on the time slot gives all four components the units of current density — the same dimensional courtesy that put (not ) into . Writing (1) is free; the physics is the claim that this quadruple transforms as a four-vector, which no amount of notation can decree. The proof is the microscopic construction:
where: is the proper charge density — measured in the charges' momentary rest frame — and their four-velocity. This is the ladder principle of Proper Time and Four-Velocity doing its signature work: multiply an invariant scalar by a certified four-vector and the product inherits the transformation law, no checking required. The invariance of itself rests on two agreements: charge is invariant (experiment), and "the volume in the rest frame" is a frame-independent specification. Reading (2) componentwise recovers both kinematic effects at once — (density up by contraction) and (flow = density times velocity). The metric contraction of (2) with itself gives the source's invariant label:
where: the second equality uses — the normalization the mechanics companion Four-Vectors and Minkowski Spacetime proved once for every four-velocity. Equation (3) is the electromagnetic sibling of , and its sign is physics: a single-species flow always has (timelike — boost to the carriers' frame and the current vanishes), while a neutral wire has with (spacelike — no frame stops the current, because it is two opposite timelike flows superposed, and different frames disagree even on the sign of its density). Real sources with several carrier species use the superposition — each species covariant, hence the sum too.
We derive the four-vector character of the source fields from first principles and verify the one claim that looks paradoxical: density transforms, yet total charge does not. The strategy is to build for a single species from invariants and certified four-vectors (the ladder principle), read off the boost behavior of and , extend by superposition, and then integrate the density to confirm is a scalar. The step to watch is the last one: the in the density and the in the volume element must cancel exactly, or the whole edifice contradicts the experimental invariance it was built on.
Step 1. Charge invariance as input. The charge in a marked bundle of carriers is a count of elementary charges times — the same in every frame. Evidence: H and He are both neutral to despite their protons' Lorentz factors differing at the percent level ( MeV/c in the alpha nucleus gives ); were charge velocity-dependent like energy, helium would be charged at the level — twenty orders of magnitude above the bound.
Step 2. Proper density is a scalar. Define with the bundle's rest-frame volume. Both numerator (invariant charge) and denominator (a rest-frame specification, agreed by all) are frame-independent numbers; so is their ratio.
Step 3. The ladder. The bundle's four-velocity is a four-vector because it is a displacement four-vector divided by proper time — an invariant denominator (Proper Time and Four-Velocity's ladder principle: preserves four-vector character; destroys it). Then is scalar × four-vector = four-vector. No component checking, ever.
Step 4. Read off the components. gives — the lab density is the proper density up by one contraction factor, because now occupies . The spatial part: — the convective current, automatically. Why does only one appear in when the four-velocity carries too? Because is and the in IS the contraction factor. The bookkeeping self-organizes — that is the point of the construction.
Step 5. Superposition. A wire, a plasma, a beam: over carrier species (or an integral over a velocity distribution). Each term is a four-vector; the sum transforms identically. This is how a neutral wire gets a perfectly good four-current: in the lab while — and the invariant (3) goes spacelike, .
Step 6. Total charge is a Lorentz scalar. Boost along at and integrate the new density over the new simultaneity slice: each carrier bundle contributes . For a bundle of species : while its volume is — the Lorentz factors cancel bundle by bundle, leaving . Summing: . Density is a component (transforms); charge is a count (invariant); the volume element is the exchange rate between them. Verified: for a copper wire's conduction electrons ( C/m per mm², mm/s), Step 4 gives with — lab and proper densities equal to 23 digits, while the same construction at LHC speeds () makes the lab density nearly four orders of magnitude above proper. Both extremes check against numerically. Matches Griffiths §12.3.3, Jackson §11.9.
Conservation goes covariant — and the wire becomes two lines
The four-gradient is born covariant (Four-Vectors and the Metric Tensor proved it via the chain rule), so contracting it with manufactures a Lorentz scalar:
where: the middle expression is the expansion in any one frame — the continuity equation of The Continuity Equation, recovered symbol for symbol. But the packaging upgrades its status: a scalar that vanishes in one frame vanishes in all. Local charge conservation is not a law that happens to hold frame-by-frame; it is a single frame-proof statement. This is the covariant closure the E6 treatment promised when it deferred "the four-dimensional reading" to this chapter. Under a standard boost the components mix exactly like :
where: the first relation is the entire "magnetism from relativity" phenomenon in four symbols: feed it , (neutral wire) and out comes — charged wire, no seven-step derivation. The second relation is its mirror: a static charge distribution () acquires a current in the boosted frame, which is just the charges sailing backward. Derivation B cashes this in.

We establish that is a Lorentz scalar equal to zero, then demonstrate the machine's power by re-deriving, in two lines, the neutral-wire charge density that Magnetism as a Relativistic Effect assembled from proper densities and velocity addition. The strategy for the first part is pure index grammar — one upper and one lower index, contracted — plus the experimental input that conservation holds in at least one frame. The wire replay then needs nothing but the boost row (5). Watch the logic direction in part one: covariance does not prove conservation; it promotes conservation-in-one-frame to conservation-in-all.
Step 1. The contraction is a scalar. transforms with the inverse-transpose matrix (born covariant, chain rule) and with ; the contraction therefore transforms with — it is the same number in every frame, by the master theorem of Four-Vectors and the Metric Tensor.
Step 2. It vanishes in one frame. In the lab, expand: , which experiment (and, deeper, the internal consistency of Maxwell's equations argued in The Continuity Equation) sets to zero.
Step 3. Therefore it vanishes in all frames: . Every inertial observer's charge ledger balances locally. A geometric reading for free: in spacetime, charge flows along worldlines, and (4) says these worldlines have no beginnings or ends — the four-flux of through any closed hypersurface is zero. Why is this not circular — didn't we build FROM invariant charge? No: invariance (same , all frames) and conservation (same , all times) are independent facts. The construction used invariance; conservation is an additional dynamical input here — until the field tensor makes it automatic, see below.
Step 4. The two-line wire, line one. The wire of Magnetism as a Relativistic Effect: neutral, carrying current — per unit length, with C/m and mm/s, so A. (Line densities transform like volume densities for boosts along the wire, since the transverse area is untouched.)
Step 5. Line two. Boost at along the current, apply (5): , i.e. . For m/s: C/m — the identical number that took the companion article a page of proper densities, velocity addition, and the identity . The four-vector had it as one matrix row. (The current also shifts: — slightly more current in the moving frame, second-order at these speeds.) Verified: with reproduces identically — the exact result of the companion's Derivation B, confirmed there to 33 significant figures against the velocity-addition route. Expansion check of (4): ✓. Matches Griffiths §12.3.3 and Zangwill §22.3.
One forward pointer completes the arc. Downstream, takes its seat as the source: the four-potential of The Four-Potential obeys , and the field tensor of The Electromagnetic Field Tensor obeys — where the antisymmetry of will make an automatic identity rather than an input, weaving charge conservation into the structure of the field equations themselves. That closure argument belongs to the field-tensor article and to Covariant Form of Maxwell's Equations; here it is only a promissory note in the other direction.

The 1 mm² copper wire of the companion article: C/m of mobile electrons drifting at mm/s against fixed ions, net current A. Write down per unit cross-section, classify it, and find the frame where the wire's density flips sign.
Step 1. Assemble. Current density A/m². The wire is neutral: . So A/m² — the current points along .
Step 2. Classify. : spacelike. No boost can reach a frame where the current vanishes — sensible, since the electrons' frame still has ions streaming backward. Yet this spacelike arrow is the sum of two timelike arrows: ions and electrons with A/m² — each species' time slot towers eleven orders of magnitude over the net current, and the ratio is no accident: . The near-cancellation of two enormous timelike currents into one tiny spacelike one is the wire, said covariantly.
Step 3. The sign flip. Boost at along : for any — negative density, as the companion found. Boost the other way (): . The comoving-with-electrons frame and the lab straddle the neutrality point; "which sign is the wire charged?" has a different answer in every frame, exactly what a spacelike time-component does.

2 · An LHC bunch as a four-current (exam level)
One LHC bunch: protons at (6.5 TeV), lab bunch length 7.55 cm. The machine holds 2808 bunches on a 26.66 km ring (revolution frequency 11245 Hz). Find the beam current, the bunch's rest-frame length, and the ratio of lab to proper charge density.
Step 1. Beam current — a pure counting exercise, no : . A fully loaded LHC beam carries about the current of a phone charger — carried by protons at .
Step 2. The bunch in its own frame. Length dilates going to the rest frame (the lab sees it contracted): . The 7.55 cm lab pancake is, to the protons, a half-kilometre-long thread — proper density is tiny.
Step 3. Density ratio. with : the lab density exceeds proper density by nearly four orders of magnitude, purely from contraction of the occupied volume. Check via the invariant: gives ✓ — the mass-shell identity, in charge.
Step 4. The conservation reading. Each bunch carries nC in every frame — the analysis frame of the detector, the proton rest frame, the lab — while , , bunch length, and density profile all differ wildly between them. Beam physicists switch frames constantly (space-charge forces are computed in the rest frame, wall interactions in the lab); the four-current is the object that makes the switching mechanical.

Is the four-current a four-vector by definition or by physics?
By physics — and the distinction matters. Anyone can gather four numbers into a list; nothing guarantees the list transforms like . The four-vector character of is established by the construction : it requires charge invariance (an experimental fact, tested to ), and it requires that real currents decompose into carrier bundles whose flows superpose. If charge picked up a velocity dependence, would still be four numbers — but boosting them with would give wrong answers, and covariant electrodynamics would collapse. The formalism is a bet on an experimental fact, which is exactly what makes it contentful.
Why does the neutral wire's charge density depend on the observer but a point charge's total charge does not?
Because they are different kinds of quantity. Total charge is an integral count — add up elementary charges, get an invariant. Charge density is a component of a four-vector — a projection onto one observer's time axis, as frame-dependent as "the x-component" of any arrow. The neutral wire dramatizes this because its four-current is spacelike: like a spacelike interval, whose time-order different frames read differently, a spacelike current's density changes sign across frames. There is genuinely no fact of the matter about "the" charge of the wire per length — only facts about and about what each specified observer measures.
Does ∂_μ J^μ = 0 prove charge conservation from relativity alone?
No — read the logic of Derivation B carefully. Covariance shows is a scalar, so if it vanishes in one frame it vanishes in all: relativity globalizes conservation, it does not create it. The vanishing itself is dynamical input — experimental at this article's level, structural once the field equations arrive: with antisymmetric forces , hence as an identity. At that point (the field-tensor article) charge conservation becomes non-negotiable: a source that violated it simply could not couple to the electromagnetic field consistently.
The invariant J·J = c²ρ₀² — what is ρ₀ for a system with several kinds of carrier?
For a single species, is the honest rest-frame density and the formula is exact. For multi-species sources the invariant still exists (any four-vector has one) but it is no longer (anyone's rest density) — the neutral wire has , negative, with no rest frame at all. The correct general statement: each species carries its own and , the total is the sum, and the total's invariant is whatever the sum yields, with sign classifying whether a current-free frame exists (timelike yes, spacelike no). Treating as "the invariant length of any " is a single-species luxury.
Why do we need charge invariance as a separate experimental input — doesn't conservation already imply it?
It does not, and energy is the standing counterexample: perfectly conserved in every inertial frame, yet famously frame-dependent (). A world where charge transformed like an energy — conserved within each frame but -scaled between frames — is logically coherent; it is just not our world. The H-versus-He comparison is the clean test precisely because it holds the constituent count fixed while varying the internal proton speeds: identical counts, different 's, and the neutrality of both to kills any velocity dependence at fantastic precision. Invariance is nature's gift; the four-current formalism is what physics looks like after gratefully accepting it.
In practice, when do I transform ρ and J with the boost formulas versus rebuilding them from carrier motion?
Always transform — that is the machine's entire value. Rebuilding from carrier kinematics (proper densities, velocity addition) is the pedagogical route: it shows why the mixing happens, and Magnetism as a Relativistic Effect walks it once so you trust the formalism. But it is slow, error-prone (the bookkeeping), and unnecessary once 's four-vector character is certified. The professional workflow: establish in whatever frame makes the physics simplest (usually where some species rests), then apply mechanically for any other frame. Reserve the microscopic rebuild for checking a result you distrust — as this article did, three routes to C/m.
Is the four-current related to the probability current of quantum mechanics?
Directly — same grammar, different substance. The Schrödinger probability current obeys a continuity equation for probability conservation; its relativistic upgrades (Klein–Gordon, Dirac) are genuine four-vectors with , and multiplying by charge turns them into the charge four-current that couples to the electromagnetic field. In quantum field theory this becomes the master pattern: Noether's theorem converts every continuous symmetry into a conserved four-current, and the electromagnetic is the one generated by phase symmetry. The object built in this article from wires and beams is the classical limit of that structure — which is why its conservation law survives every revolution physics has had since.
