Problem

An aircraft has an air-speed of 180 km h−1180\,\text{km h}^{-1} directed 45∘45^{\circ} east of north. A steady wind of 40 km h−140\,\text{km h}^{-1} blows towards the east. (i) Resolve the aircraft’s air-speed and the wind velocity into rectangular components, taking the xx–axis towards the east and the yy–axis towards the north. (ii) Hence obtain the ground velocity (resultant velocity) of the aircraft in component form, and calculate its magnitude and true heading (angle measured east of north). (iii) The pilot wishes to reach a point that is 600 km600\,\text{km} due north of the present position. Estimate the time taken to reach this point with the wind blowing as stated.
