Problem

A lift is descending with a constant acceleration of 2.5 m s−22.5\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}. A passenger of mass 70 kg70\,\text{kg} stands on a spring balance kept on the lift floor. Take g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}. (i) Calculate the reading shown by the spring balance while the lift is accelerating downward. (ii) If the supporting cable of the lift suddenly snaps so that the lift falls freely, determine the reading on the balance during the free fall.
