Problem

A function is defined as f(x)=k(tan⁡x−1)+3f(x)=k\bigl(\tan x-1\bigr)+3 for xx in the interval [0,π4]\left[0,\dfrac{\pi}{4}\right]. The average value of ff over this interval is known to be 44. (i) Obtain the equation that must be satisfied by kk and hence determine the value of kk. (ii) For the constant kk found in part (i), the Mean Value Theorem for Integrals guarantees a point cc in (0,π4)\left(0,\dfrac{\pi}{4}\right) such that f(c)=4f(c)=4. Find the exact value of cc.
