Problem

A child of mass 35 kg35\,\text{kg} starts from rest at the top of a 3.2 m3.2\,\text{m}-high frictionless slide. Upon reaching the bottom, the child continues onto a straight horizontal stretch of rough plastic for which the coefficient of kinetic friction between the child and the plastic is μk=0.36\mu_k=0.36. Assume the child remains in contact with the surface of the slide and the plastic at all times and that air resistance is negligible. (a) Determine the child’s speed immediately after leaving the bottom of the slide and before encountering the rough horizontal stretch. (b) Calculate the distance the child travels along the horizontal stretch before coming to rest.
