Problem

A cricket ball of mass 150 g150\,\text{g} is moving horizontally towards a fielder at 25 m s−125\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. The fielder brings the ball to rest. (i) If the ball is stopped in 5.0×10−3 s5.0\times10^{-3}\,\text{s} when the hands are kept rigid, calculate the average force experienced by the hands. (ii) When the fielder moves his hands backward, the time of contact becomes 2.0×10−2 s2.0\times10^{-2}\,\text{s}. Determine the new average force. (iii) Find the ratio of the force in part (i) to that in part (ii) and interpret your result in terms of safe catching technique.
