Problem

Answer the following with reference to the point that represents 2\sqrt{2} on the number line. (i) State the meaning of the principle that every real number corresponds to exactly one point on a straight line and every point on that line corresponds to exactly one real number. (ii) Point OO represents 00 and point AA represents 11 on the number line. From AA, a segment ABAB of length 11 unit is drawn perpendicular to the line. The end BB is joined to OO. Explain clearly why the point PP where OBOB meets the number line corresponds to 2\sqrt{2}. (iii) Show that 2\sqrt{2} cannot be expressed in the form pq\dfrac{p}{q} where pp and qq are integers, q≠0q\ne0. (iv) Write 2\sqrt{2} correct to four decimal places.
