Problem

A laboratory furnace is fitted with a small circular aperture of area 0.010 m², through which radiation escapes. The furnace behaves like an ideal blackbody. (i) At some instant the peak emission wavelength of the emerging radiation is 700 nm. Find the radiant power leaving the aperture at this time. (ii) The electrical input to the furnace is then increased so that the power escaping through the same aperture becomes five times the value calculated in part (i). Determine the new peak emission wavelength corresponding to this condition. (Use b=2.898×10−3 m Kb = 2.898\times10^{-3}\,\text{m\,K} and σ=5.67×10−8 W m−2K−4\sigma = 5.67\times10^{-8}\,\text{W\,m}^{-2}\text{K}^{-4}.)
