Problem
A furnace used for heat treatment emits radiation like a perfect blackbody. At its normal operating condition the furnace wall is at 1200K and the peak of its emission spectrum is at wavelength λ1.
During a production surge, extra fuel is supplied such that the total radiant power per unit area from the wall becomes nine times the original value.
(i) Calculate the new wall temperature of the furnace.
(ii) Using your result from part (i), obtain the ratio λ2:λ1 of the new peak wavelength to the original peak wavelength.
(iii) Comment briefly on how the colour of the furnace glow perceived by the naked eye would change after the power increase.
