Problem

Three vehicles move along a straight level road in the same direction: • a car of mass 1.2×103 kg1.2 \times 10^3\,\text{kg} at 15 m/s15\,\text{m/s}, • a motorcycle of mass 1.5×102 kg1.5 \times 10^2\,\text{kg} at 30 m/s30\,\text{m/s}, • a loaded truck of mass 8.0×103 kg8.0 \times 10^3\,\text{kg} at 5 m/s5\,\text{m/s}. Answer the following: (i) Calculate the magnitude of linear momentum for each vehicle. (ii) Arrange the vehicles in descending order of magnitude of momentum and show your working. (iii) If each driver can apply brakes producing a maximum retarding force of 6.0×103 N6.0 \times 10^3\,\text{N}, which vehicle will take the greatest time to come to rest? Give a reason based on your results from part (i).
