Problem

(a) State the experimental observation of Hertz and Lenard regarding the effect of light intensity on the maximum kinetic energy of the emitted photoelectrons. (b) Classical electromagnetic wave theory predicts that the energy of an electron set into oscillation by light should increase with the amplitude of the wave. Explain, with reasons, why the observation stated in part (a) contradicts this prediction. (c) Describe qualitatively how the graph of photocurrent versus applied potential would change, if at all, when the intensity of incident light on a metal surface is doubled while its frequency is kept fixed above the threshold value.
